God And Humor

Psalms 50:10 “For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.”

Cattle upon a thousand hills?  How about a thousand cattle upon one hill?  Now that would be the picture!  God in the beef feedlot business.  Eagerly out there on a Sunday, breaking the Christian Sabbath, with a skid loader pushing poop in a pile while the cattle look on.  Would Jesus run the tractor, filling the bunks with feed or would the Holy Spirit somehow take the wheel?  Who would negotiate with the DNR about the pit and the recent accidental release into a nearby stream?  At price-per-head on sell versus buying price, would He break even or making a killing?  Could He get a resurrected Moses to do the books?  We know he liked to write.

These are issues God would have to consider if He got into the consolidated ranching business.  I mean, who would He hire?  Cheap angelic labor?  This force at His disposal would keep His overhead down.  Undercutting all other lots, He could contract with a major beef processor and get a stable gain profiting His investors for years to come.  This would be the Lord.  That’s how He’d run things.

But this question still would reign.  What would God do with PETA?  Cattle hoofing it about in mud.  A tailored diet to make them gain weight at a good rate.  Humane handling and truck transport.  Would these resistant pressures be too much for Him?  Would Jesus hold a press conference if one of His semi-trailers jackknifed on the interstate loosing a bovine massacre?  I don’t know.  I am unsure. He’s God, but what of His response?

He would smile.  Our imaginations untainted construct images hilarious.  And that’s ok.  Ever read through the Gospels and get a smile on your face?  Jesus in predicaments.  Disciples in their behind-the-scenes dialogues.  The healed jump for joy and say something stupid.  His Spirit awakens us to Biblical reality as we read.  Slipping us into the story, we get the Paul Harvey commentary.  A new refreshing facet to reflect the light and brighten our day.  Chewing the cud, we ruminate throughout the day on a morsel from the Master’s table.

Humor solidifies the truth in our minds.  Creating the framework, the picture is hung on the wall for further remembrance.  Jokes have a way of sinking in it.

So, does God have a sense of humor?  Yes.  A mark of maturity is if someone can laugh at themselves.  Also, if they can join in this laughter with others as He bears the brunt of the joke.  In other words, God says, “Bring it on!”  when the roasting heats up.

God teases.  God jokes.  God gives us a hard time.  If we know Him as a true Father who jests with His children in ridiculous laughter, we come closer to His character.  We indeed are created in His image.  My dog doesn’t laugh, and I think that is the difference.

Laughter marks us as Mankind.  It sets us apart from the animal kinds.  Would Jesus then tell a joke?  A pun?  A play-on-words?  Better believe it because God is the source of all good things.
