God At Our Core

God At Our Core

Numbers 20:10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

12 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

I am no sailor.  I know little about ships, yet the understanding is this.  Within a ship is a ballast.  At the lowest part above the keel, weight is put to stabilize the ship in rough waters.  It lowers the ship’s center of gravity and sets it in the water.  The ballast is crucial to the ship’s erection.

God addressed the core trait in Moses.

Numbers 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)

Moses’ humility kept him centered.  With all the opposition of Israel in the wilderness, Moses overcame with his humility.  Scriptures find him falling down before God repeatedly.  He knew it was God that stood him up, and by His power he kept on standing.

So critical was humility to Moses’ character that God corrects quickly.  He knew without humility, Moses would unravel.  Pride would destroy him.  A heavy ballast kept Moses afloat in those turbid times when they demanded answers and Moses sought God for clarity.  He did not say, “Well I guess so.” Or “In my  opinion.” His actions confessed that he knew not how to lead Israel.  He was dependent, utterly.

Utter dependence upon God is humility.

Micah 6:8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Humility unlocks the door to God’s kingdom.  “My son, I have been waiting so long!  You have come home.”  And we come to the door of Jesus confessing we do not know how to stand.  Pride in false erection of a hollow spine devoid of fluid, crumbles.  We are undignified, before Him.

He sees us in our nakedness.  He knows our form as we do not hide any longer.  He takes the shame that threatens to implode us.  Dignity, for He Himself has answered the door.  In private meeting, we fall on the threshold.

God is the One who gives worth.
