Faith In Time

Faith In Time

Isaiah 64:4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

To wait for the Lord is faith.  First, we have confidence in His character.  Then we discipline ourselves not to sacrifice to the urgent.  “God will because He said He would.”  Rest comes when we sit on His promises.  Even standing takes effort so we sit.

What is the use in jumping the gun?  What drives us to pull the trigger prematurely?  Anxiety, with its root in fear, pulls in control to form the lariat.  Tossing it wildly, we hope to reign in what we cannot control.  Off balance, we fall again from the saddle eating a mouth of dirt as we hear the enemy riding away laughing.

Another failure?  Only if we do not learn.

Getting buck fever is a common thing.  The young man’s first hunt.  Rising at dawn, getting the gear, and riding out with the guys.  Uncasing the bow, spraying the scent, and walking the woods in hopes of a trophy.  Climbing the tree stand and taking his place, the sun rises while the forest floor comes into focus.  Underneath the stand runs a well-worn path with deer signs.  He waits.  Just as sleep threatens his eyes, the prize appears.  An eight-point buck saunters in from the right.  Slowly the hunter raises the notched arrow to his cheek.  Eyeing the sights he draws the bow.  The buck barely in range, he breathes shallowly. Forty yards to thirty, the target struts closer through the sun’s cast light.

A pause. A prick of the ears to catch an odd forest sound.  The buck steadies himself as if to bolt.  His tensioned arm burning, it cries for release, but the young man subdues it.  Patience whispers to wait for the best shot, but anxiety jumps to shoot now.

Do we get caught in dilemmas like this hunter?  We confess not to know the future.  Conjecture tirades about our souls gnawing the flesh till it gets blood.  In pain, we seek solace while the waiting lags on.  Longsuffering seems to make no sense as a personal giant cries another threat to our face.  “He can’t be beat,” we say as we duck his blow.  Time mounts its crashing course.  There’s no way out.

Matthew 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

He will work a way to those who wait upon Him.  For those who continually look to Him for the solution, He does not turn away.
