The Weight Of Words

The Weight Of Words

Matthew 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Ecclesiastes 7:It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

Proverbs 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.

We are not God.  Praise the Lord!  For we utter things that fall to the ground.  But shall we be judged for every idle word?

Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

I don’t know for sure what these verses mean, but it is imperative that we mind our mouths.

Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Do we speak as children?  Do we need God’s corrective rod to instruct us?

Isaiah 6:Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

Isaiah, the great prophet, knew where he stood before the Lord.  He was but a man speaking things only common to a man in that same manner.  In other words, his spoken words were not worthy to be written down especially in the Bible.  He lacked as we all do, discipline.

Jesus said every idle word.  Every word in hate or envy.  Every word that does not profit the hearer.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

So, in conclusion, words link us to the spiritual realm.  Our physical actions yield the consequences, but there is more power in the tongue.  With the tongue we break or mend.  In speech we can minister to those hurting.  Since we are spiritual beings, our words light or extinguish those around.  In a manner worthy of our calling, let us choose wisely our words today.
