Gender And Tongue
Gender And Tongue
Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in his own
image, in the image of God created he him; male and female
created he them.”
Acts 2:8 “And how hear we every man in
our own tongue, wherein we were born?”
Two markers set off a man’s identity. Our family, into which we are born, reaffirms
our sexual disposition. Boy or
girl? The sign hangs proudly on the
front door after birth. Dad hands out
the cigars. Mom puts the baby shower
gifts to good use. Blue or pink? In America, these colors still mean
something.
In our formative years, we learn the
language of the home. Our own tongue, as
it shapes our minds and our individual expression. A Korean home differs from an English-speaking
home. Tonality is everything while the
English may put more emphasis in word choice.
Gender and tongue. At the root of who we are, all other
identities grow from this.
So what of importance? God surely has created beings of
character. So divided He the common language
of all the earth into primal tongues. At
conception, He ascribes gender. With all
the flavors of combinations this could provide, He adds to it skin color and
bodily makeup. Eye and hair color. Short or tall. Stalky or slim. He shows man in all his array. Encompassing the broad spectrum that genetics
provide, God the master craftsman takes pleasure in working unique pieces of
art. Scientifically, our bodies mystify
great minds showing variance with great similarity.
Psalms 139:13 “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in
my mother's womb.14 I
will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous
are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”
God loves
diversity. In all of creation, He didn’t
just make one kind of bird or deer. In
fact, His whole rainbow of light shines up from creatures teeming with life
under a sun responsible for their existence.
He goes to great lengths to show the depth of His character. With all the plethora of beings, we could get
lost wondering where we fit into His expanse, but He nails us down.
It is good for a
man to have boundaries. Certain absolutes
which he cannot change. Our gender He
has embedded in our bodies and so characterized our spirits to a masculine or
feminine bent. In addition, the logic of
our minds runs in the pattern so dictated by a tongue we speak. God does not freak us. He uses commonality to ensure our sanity.
Gender and
tongue. Two starting blocks from which
we reach forth.
