Absolute No
Absolute No
Matthew 12:31 “Wherefore I say unto you, All
manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy
against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.”
2 Corinthians 1:8 “For we would not, brethren,
have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed
out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:”
Suicide stands in confusion. It swallows many in its shadow as it passes
by. Coldness creeps into our bones as
the sun is masked. Questions flare and
doubt ensues those left. We desperately reach
and hold a ghost of what was.
Does God’s mercy fail? In this final act, does He turn never to look
back again? This is not the God I know.
Suicide screws us up on many levels. First, we were never designed to process death. As creatures meant to live forever, our
capacity to understand finality wanes. Next,
in our time here, we invest in relationships growing them and enjoying their
fruits. To have a loved one chainsaw down
their own tree makes us wonder what we did wrong. Finally, spiritual questions arise like a
beast cloaked under water. He threatens
drawing closer to the surface until its mighty teeth can no longer be
ignored. “Has suicide condemned him to
Hell?”
God terms the unpardonable sin. It is best known as a lie. God resides in truth. His essence in purity excludes all lie as He
is violently opposed to all falsehood and deception. In other words, our God loves the exuberant
exaltation of truth to the highest level.
In fact, all of Heaven’s foundation rests upon what eternity has
provided it. God’s unchanging character
He has so assured. “I cannot lie.” We do not understand as we are created beings.
God’s holiness is something He also holds
dear. No shadow plagues His brightness. Pure light beams forth from His throne. Again, all of Heaven basks in His glow as our
sun gives light to grow and mature. He
knows anything less than holy would damage His creation, so He emanates His Spirit
bountifully.
The unpardonable sin is a double
whammy. It strikes with lie calling God
unholy. A testimony God will not
tolerate. Blasphemy against His Son He
forgives for Man is crippled in his understanding of one man’s ministry. But the ongoing testament of His presence
here is to persuade all of His character as divine not demonic.
In the light of this, suicide is rather
small. A personal choice ending it
all? No, our Father is God of the living
and the dead. He holds all with a tender
hand. Paul knew the depths of
despair. Such a superhero took off his
cape and sat down in tears. If he was nearly
succumb to this temptation, can’t we have mercy upon our own frailty?
Our Father’s absolute no rests in what He will not be absolutely known as. God is not a liar. He draws the line there.
