All of Mankind must stand before God. He is called into His courtroom. The prosecuting attorney wears horns and is
famous for his accusations. He knows the
law. His tongue can recite it forward
and back. Reasoning is honed as a well-balanced
knife and Satan grins for the opportunity to display his wares. Since his ill conception, iniquity has grown
in his heart and possessed his soul.
Convinced of his eventual judgment, now is his time to fill God’s prison
with inmates sharing damnation.
We are called to the stand. Prosecution opens books. Observations made about our lives tell
graphic cross points where we have stepped daringly. We have not respected boundaries although made in the similitude of God. As His special creatures capable of
reasoning, we have ignored manifestations of wisdom. Logic is fleshed out and his skillful tongue
stacks a deck threatening to collapse upon our fragile frame.
Our
seat grows cold and our head hangs knowing these accounts are true. Dramaticism has brought occurrences to reality as we watch the reel of the serpent. He takes pleasure in his performance and
rests his case.
“Do not represent yourself,” they say.
A good lawyer even the Judge recommends.
Afterall, who knows the loopholes and finer points? The law’s requirements are long. The list of our infractions is longer.
A Man in white approaches to
cross examine. Determined to exhume
noble motives and show the court our true nature, He launches into our
defense. Dissecting each action brought
to light by prosecution, He is pressed to bring anything of substance revealing
the righteousness God’s court requires.
In fact, no good work satisfies the standard. Hence, we have not lived up to expectation.
In this precarious position, we sit before the Almighty who bears the gavel in
hand. Our sentence declared, “Guilty.” Preparing to be apprehended, we
close our eyes to remember past freedom lost.
The bailiff crosses clutching an orange suit. Forever branded, we are sure the size will
fit.
To our amazement, an anomaly directs the
confiner’s hands to the defense desk. A
patient conversation ensues, and our Attorney lowers in submission. Folding his white garment in exchange for orange,
we see our sentence transferred. Cuffed
and shackled, skidding chains across the floor ironically sound our freedom.
Could
this be our hope?
Romans 5:7 “For scarcely for a
righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even
dare to die.8 But
God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us.”
